Youth Novels reviews

"Someone should bottle up whatever is in the water in Sweden and sell it. It seems each passing month brings another Swedish indie pop treasure, and songstress Lykke Li is the latest. Li's sound is sparse orchestral pop with the occasional electronic dressing etching its way through the background. The album maintains a quaint lo-fi production throughout, but does an excellent job of changing up the sound from one track to the next to remain fresh from start to finish. Li's vocals may be a sticking point for some, as they are reminiscent of a quieter take on the high-pitched sweetness of Tegan & Sara. In the midst of the lightly speckled backdrops found here, the vocals fit in well. Given her fragile voice, it is impressive that the vocals only become a liability on "Time Flies", where she gets so quiet you cannot understand her amidst the muted arrangement. "

"The debut album for the Swedish singer was produced by Bjorn Yttling. "

"Still only 22 (!), Lykke Li has constructed one of 2008's most ambitiously grandiose statements. Madonna can shuffle off to her Live Nation millions, a new pop saviour has been found."

"Charming debut from flirtatious Scandinavian popette."

"With a tiny voice, minimalist arrangements and simple lyrics, this Swedish songwriter has crafted what seems like a magical album, where all its small elements coalesce into something quite big."
